Montgomery CFE Centre

News update

September 2010 - The children at Montgomery are doing very well they are bright and happy children who love their school visits.

Some of the assistance that we have been able to help the community with is as follows:

A centre where the children can learn, play and eat, giving then a healthy lifestyle where more than just their survival needs are met.

- We have helped one of the ‘O’Level students in the community pay for her exam fees.  In return her  mother will do some sewing for us for the children’s uniforms

- We have been able to assist some of the community elders with the help of transport to the hospital; this is made possible by the teachers who report any major incidents to us.

- All of our children of age were accepted into Grade One this year, these children have done well at school and the Primary School has indicated that Vimba has helped them with achieving their targets for the year.

June 2010 -  We have put down a deposit for a jungle gym for the children. We are keen to give this to them as a Christmas present from Vimba, before the Vimba Committee comes to see them.  The mill is not working the way we had hoped it would, we will run it as a stationary mill for the area for the time being. February 2010 – The project is running well, we have enough money left to run the whole year.  The mill that runs these centres has been working well, however, due to the rains, this month we were not able to mill as much maize as the previous month.  The uniforms for Montgomery have been made; more material is needed for Montgomery and Mapere.  The material for the benches has been purchased and we will be getting a local community member involved in carpentry to mend the existing benches.

Project info

The Montgomery Feeding Centre is located in the Barwick District, Concession.  There are approximately 50 children at the centre, this number varies on a monthly basis.  We have two caregivers at Montgomery who have been trained in child care; these carers are responsible for the following:

  • Making sure that the children are fed daily
  • Checking that the children are healthy, and cases of a child that is sick would be referred to the local clinic.
  • The caregivers provide activities for the children including, drawing, colouring, learning to count, learning their 'abc's' and singing as well as many other activities.
  • The caregivers have been instructed to inform us of any cases of suspected abuse.  Such cases will be reffered to the local authorities in the form of the 'Victim Friendly Units'.

With the money raised Vimba purchased a grinding mill in the beginning of December.  A member of the Barwick Community has been identified to run the mill.  He has provided the car with one of the Vimba members providing the trailer to be used for pulling the mill.  This mill has now been working for just over a month and has already proven to be a successful venture, the mill has been bringing in $600 a month which is enough to help support both the Montgomery and Mapere feeding centres.

The community have been very involved in the setting up of this centre.  The youth painted the classroom whilst some of the fathers dug holes for where the fence will be erected.  The mothers will be making the uniforms out of the material that Vimba has provided.

The children are currently being fed one meal a day of CSB.  This has the correct nutritional value needed for a person to combat many of the diseases caused by malnutrition.  All of the parents, children and community of Montgomery farm are grateful to Vimba for their kind donation.
