Mapere CFE Centre

News update

September 2010 -

We have supplied Mapere with new art supplies as well as exterior paint.   One of the teachers would like to paint cartoons around the buildings to make them more cheerful and exciting for the children.

Mapere has had many new advances over the past few months:

-The buildings have been done, windows and doors have been put in.

-Originally we had two classrooms for the feeding center, however, Mapere School had an intake of grade ones which they were unable to fit into the classrooms that they have available.  Because of this, the Vimbabweans took the decision to open one of their rooms to the school as a Grade One classroom.

-We have had a teacher from Harare come and do inspirational talks to the children

-The Mapere headmaster contracted some builders to come and dig a well for water.  Vimba paid for the installation to bring water to the community surrounding the feeding center.

Projects

Benches

We are currently getting benches made for the children by one of the builders that resides at Montgomery, it is our hope that we will be able to make them jungle gyms too as a Christmas present

Nurse

The Montgomery and Mapere teachers will be going for a course on basic health care.  She will be training them on:

-Basic First Aid

-Aids Awareness Talk

-Breastfeeding for new Mothers talk

-Care of children talk

-Hygiene talk

There will be no qualification given for this course, but we believe that it will be useful to arm the teachers with this information.  They are seen as a point of contact for the community and so the more knowledge they have the better.

June 2010 - Mapere feeding centre is going well with regards to the food and building of their facility.  There is still an issue with their water supply.  We need to raise some money towards digging a well and fitting a hand pump.  It was discussed that this would be the best option as a borehole would require constant power as well as it would be expensive to maintain.  The constant power surges in Zimbabwe mean that borehole pumps are replaced constantly.  If there was a well with a hand pump, the tank would no longer be necessary.  We have re supplied Mapere with food and have sent down stationary for the children to work with.  The uniforms for the teachers are being made. Please click here for updated photos of Mapere.

February 2010 - This project is running well, we have enough money left to run the whole year.  The mill that runs these centres has been working well, however, due to the rains, this month we were not able to mill as much maize as the previous month.  This month Mapere has been sent windows, paint and cement in order to improve the current facility.  The carers at the feeding centre require training so courses will be identified.

Project info

On the seventh of January 2010 the Mapere Feeding Centre was opened.  In the first month 47 children have frequented the centre.  There is a lot of work to be done by Vimba and the community to make the existing building more suitable for the children.  Vimba has purchased 2 windows, paint and various hardware to repair the playground equipment.  A blackboard will also be painted for teaching purposes.  The Vimba team will be meeting with the community on the sixth of February 2010 to start the alterations and repairs.

Thank you to all those who support Vimba, The communities surrounding these centres are excited to be participating in this program.
