Zimbabwe Orphan Foundation - Banket

Started by Hans and Mary Wasmus

A Vimba Committee member on the ground in Zimbabwe recently visited an Orphanage in Banket. A couple, Hans and Mary Wasmus, run the orphanage based in a Catholic School in Banket, where they have been given a couple of rooms to use.  They are feeding 72 AIDS orphans, around 80% of the children at the orphanage have AIDS. They look after children who have no parents due to AIDS or who only have one parent who is too sick to provide for their family.  Their aim is to feed the children 5 days a week and to provide day care. The children come to the school where they have a couple of carers who look after them in the mornings and give them lunch, they also have a Doctor that comes once every 2 weeks to check the health of the children and the mothers. The mothers who can help come in every day and they have started a vegetable garden which they work in.

They handed out blankets recently and but there were several kids that did not receive –with our limited rescourses  it is so hard to try and help everyone. This orphanage is in desperate need of a proper kitchen, as you can see from the photos where the mothers are cooking on an open fire in a derelict building.

Vimba is helping by raising funds to update the old kitchen into something more liveable and hygenic where the food can be prepared. NDY Perth Australia has had two events in which they have raised over AU$1500 and this will go towards fixing the kitchen. In addition Vimba would like to buy them some pots and cooking materials, and assist in providing education to the centre.
